Atahu Electric at Horsham An A1 ride from Tahlia Hope settled Atahu just behind the hot speed, where she was able to switch off and get the run of the race. Approaching the turn, she had the trail of the eventual second placegetter which brought her right into the race and within the final furlong she showed a dazzling turn of foot, winning by 2.5lengths eased down, ears pricked on the line. Atahu has always possessed the ability to win races and in her second start for Mitch Freedman, she put it all together, with a dominant 2.5length win at 80-1. Following some below-par performances, it was very pleasing to see the ownership group rewarded for their patience with the filly and their trust in the Mitch Freedman team. Freedman said post-race “She jumped out well before a disappointing first race for the team on the Ballarat polytrack, so it was great to see her turn it around and get a win for her owners.” Congratulations to the ownership group and any lucky supporters of the stable who found her at the price! Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed yearlings Fresh from the breakers it's that time of year the stable is littered with youngsters, we show them around the tracks and expose them to the stable routine. They're then tipped out for a well-earned rest and will return next preparation having established some famailarity with the stable. A special visit for Ruthie Dear Alex and team, Just wanted to say a huge thank you for accommodating our request for Ruthie to meet “Hope” on her 81st birthday. It was so perfect and made Mum very happy, the kindness and patience of yourself and your team was amazing.
Hope is very beautiful and we are excited to see her mature and develop in your care. It’s difficult to watch your parents decline in old age, but on this occasion there was only joy (totally loves her gifted mug and beanie). All the best, and thanks again. Leon and Claire Mullins Tuscan Sun Shines Bright Tuscan Sun is the first foal from multiple stakes-winning mare Tuscan Sling, he had a long road to getting to the races. Unfortunately, as a younger horse, he has had two suspensory ligament issues and has required long periods of rehab. The patience Mr Jamieson and Mr Ryan displayed with this horse, along with the faith from trainer Mitch Freedman has been unwavering. “It was very satisfying to see Tuscan Sun put it all together and get a well-deserved victory for his connections. He is a horse who has had issues along the way, and I must thank Gilgai Farm & Limerick Lane for their patience and trust.” Only in his fifth start as a 4yo gelding, Tuscan Sun has continued to get better at every start. With the addition of blinkers, he improved sharply and was placed twice at his previous two starts, before finally breaking through at Stawell. Jarrod Fry, who has partnered Tuscan Sun at every start, was very pleased with the effort of the gelding. “Today was the best turn of foot he has displayed and he just keeps getting better with racing.” As a Vobis Gold nominated son of Cable Bay, Tuscan Sun is eligible for the Victorian Vobis Sires Boost, adding extra gusto to his victory. Gilgai Farm & Limerick Lane are great supporters of the Victorian Breeding Industry and deserved recipients of the bonus scheme. Tuscan Sun is a horse who has great upside and will continue to improve as he grows with experience. We can’t wait to see him stepping up in grade at his next start. Glenn Tyler pictured with Kermadec colt Owner of the month Glenn Tyler Glenn Tyler is not one to shy from a challenge and says horse racing is a roller coaster, the highs are very high and the lows are very low. Racing was in his blood from an early age with his father involved in horse racing and his grandfather an eager punter until his last breath, it was inevitable that horses would be in Glenn’s life too. Winding back the clock a few years, there was a horse that Glenn part-owned called Apprehend. He won eight races including the Listed Werribee Cup and over half a million dollars in prize money, the rest is history. Following the success with Apprehend, when his half-sister was on the market Glenn wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to purchase her, and later forming a syndicate of past players from the Rupanyup Football Club . The filly was named after Rene Bignell , from the Rananyup Panthers Football Club. “The reason we named the horse Mrs Bignell is because Rene Bignell was the first women to be presented with a life membership at the Rupanyup Footy Club . We’re going to follow that path with Mrs Bignell’s filly, she’s going to be named after Rene Brignell’s daughter Aura Ballantine so we’ll carry on the tradition." Explains Glenn. Mrs Bignell was a very consistent mare who won on five occasions and placed at both Moonee Valley and Flemington. Thus far Mrs Bignell has two foals on the ground, a yearling filly by Impending who is at the breakers and a Kermadec weanling colt. “This is our first time dipping our toe in the water as breeders, we’re finding it an expensive exercise but hopefully there’s some prize money at the end of it.” “The best thing I’ve done is get a syndicate of friends together, it keeps you in touch and it makes the winning races even more enjoyable. And when you lose it’s not so disappointing, because you’re still sharing the experience with your mates.” “Our syndicate is made up of predominantly ex footballers from the Rupanyup Panthers Football Club. The syndicate decided to keep the mare Mrs Bignell and breed 2 foals from her, as a rising 11 year old she has now commenced an equestrian career just outside of Ararat.” “They say you haven’t experienced being an owner until you’ve bred a winner, so we aim to get one and hopefully two past the post." Glenn established his relationship with Mitch when Greg Baker stopped training in Horsham, he explains. “Our syndicate decided to move our horse to Mitch as he was a highly regarded up and coming trainer, despite showing ability the mare had 15 or so starts for no wins before transferring to Mitch’s Warrnambool stable and winning first up at Horsham in May 2017 when well ridden by Dean Holland.” With a few young horses on the rise we wish Glenn and the Rupanyup Panthers Syndicate all the best, we hope to see them in the winners circle in the future.
