Mattei after winning the Vale Ben McGuiness Handicap at Sportsbet-Ballarat Racecourse on September 20

Mattei Turns His Form Around

Returning to the races this preparation at Pakenham, Mattei was good first up but then had a couple of runs where things didn’t quiet go his away. From wide barriers, to fast tempos and then very slow tempos, he has seen it all this preparation.

A surprised Freedman said post-race “I thought he needed an extra run before he was fit and ready to fire with the blinkers back on, but we certainly take the win where we can get it."

What’s the race you’d love to win, and why?
Melbourne Cup, Australia's biggest race. The race that stops the nation!

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Be patient, good things take time.

Q: When did your journey into horse racing begin and what is your very first memory of horse racing?
A: I have always had an interest in horse racing and having a punt, I always go to the races with the family and have a stack of fun. The "Clip Clop Club" for the kids was great!

Ultimately I wanted to get involved in horse ownership, I dabbled in some public syndication horses initially and then tried to breed one with a group of family and friends. Without any luck there, I decided to take a bit of a plunge with a group of family members and buy into a couple of horses via Darren Weir's stable at the time.

I now have a family syndicate with my son, my two brothers, and my mum all involved. Which has been great fun and has enabled us all to get involved with more horses.

Q: How did you become to have horses with Mitch and what has your experience been like as an owner?
A: When I bought into a couple of horses via the Darren Weir stable, one of those horses was Zorro's Dream, aka Sogno, who was trained by Mitch.

The experience of being an owner is full of highs and lows, there is never a dull moment. The excitement and anticipation of seeing your horse progress and to get to the races, is a feeling that you can never get enough of. I have found Mitch Freedman Racing to be first class with how they engage with owners in all facets of the business. The owner updates that are regularly sent out are always comprehensive and really informative. Their stables at Ballarat have a real close knit family feel about them, and the horses are so well looked after.

Q: Do you have a favourite memory or highlight that involves horses?
A: First wins of any horse that I have had shares in. A highlight would have to be the first win of Zorro's Dream at Kyneton in 2019 and being there to see it. Zorro's Dream winning at Flemington was also a favourite memory, even though we were in lockdown at the time and I could not be there.

Q: One race you’d love to win and why?

A: Any maiden win for horses that I have shares in. It's so hard to get a horse to the races, let alone win a race, so this is something I love to see happen.

But while I am at it, I will say the Gold Coast Magic Millions, the Blue Diamond or the Golden Slipper with She's Loaded. No pressure Mitch!

Jennyanydots

The daughter of Magnus recently made her debut at Swan Hill on September 24, narrowly missing victory first up by a nose for second place on the line.

It was a classy performance first up, we're excited to see what's in store for connections of Jennyanydots going forward and hope to see them in the winners circle soon.
