The Late Mail...

Around the traps...

Above - Hedged is flying the flag for RTD in Sydney this weekend taking on the best 3YO's in the country in the Gr2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes worth $1m

Another really busy week for the team with runners all over the country, sales in Sydney, and
plenty of horse movements as we prepare for carnivals in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane over the next 3 months.

On the track was a bit of a nightmare with only two third placings for the week. We had three favourites go around on Saturday from 4 runners in Victoria, Queensland and Adelaide. In fact we had 3 runners in 40 minutes and couldn't get a winner, which is frustrating for our owners and us. We have had a golden run of late so sometimes it feels unfair when you get beat but that is the racing game.

This weekend we will see Hedged in Sydney for Day 2 of the Championships in the Gr2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes, which is exciting for his owners who will fly up for the weekend and be part of the action. We will also shortly send Barbaric Lad to Queensland for the winter carnival in a bid to get some valuable black type into his pedigree.

Finally we attended the Inglis Easter Sale last Sunday and bought a cracking Capitalist colt who looks a real running 2YO type. See below for details on how to get involved with him.

He's the one!
Our stallion making colt for 2024
Only 10% left...do not miss out!

Above - Lot 145 a cracking colt by Capitalist out of the Gr3 winning mare Meryl

We really opened the shoulders this Easter at the Inglis Sales and for good reason. This is the colt for 2024 that we hope is the life changer for RTD owners. We have purchased two colts to date who have gone on and had stud careers, Mahuta and Profiteer, and we think this colt has all the ingredients to make this our third.

We have bought home a cracking colt by Capitalist and it's a sire that we have had great success with. This colt has it all, size, strength, presence, and an amazing attitude to just get on with the job. Buying from Inglis Easter ensures you know what you are buying. It's the last major sale of the year and the yearlings are nearly fully developed compared to the earlier sales where you have to use your imagination a little more.

We don't need to use our imagination with this bloke, he's all quality and an early going type. Born in August he has had plenty of time and we have already sent him to be educated with Nathan Dunn at Cranbourne.

The comparisons with Profiteer our colt from 2021 are uncanny in looks, but that's not the reason we purchased him. This is a nicer colt from a confirmation point of view, with a better pedigree, and so we should be having to fork out $320K to get him. As Mick Price said, if he was by Snitzel or Written Tycoon he is a seven figure colt. So we think we shopped well and found that hole in the market at that price given the success we have had with the Capitalist breed (Profiteer now at stud and Hedged running in the Gr2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes at Randwick on Saturday for $1m in prizemoney).

The colt's dam, Meryl, is a multiple Group 3 winner and Group 2 placed herself and an excellent performed mare so you are guaranteed tremendous value if this colt can win early races and get black type from a stud value proposition.

Only 10% remaining and a cost of $19,845 for 5% this colt will be sold out by the weekend.

Last Week's Runners..

Nova Lights went around at Cranbourne on Friday night in a 1200m 3YO fillies' maiden and she went great finishing strongly for third. From the wide barrier we had to go back and she was wide working the whole way. Coming to the turn she wobbled around and lost momentum but once she straightened she hit the line really well. She is looking for further and a bigger track and she will have her hoof on the till for sure.

Globe went around in the Gr 3 Victoria Handicap on Saturday and on face value it looked a little disappointing with him finishing fourth. Upon reflection the leaders ran some quick sectionals and he stuck on well over a distance that we know is not his best. He will psuh on now to 1600m and with the freshness knocked out of him we will expect a stronger showing second up.

We also saw Peace Treaty go around at Caulfield on Saturday, this time in a 3YO fillies' race over 1200m and she got a strange ride from Ethan Brown. With best intentions to not get her fired up and grabbing the bridle, he allowed her to flop out of the barriers and she settled last. Coming to the turn she accelerated quickly but had way too much to do and finished sixth. She is back on track and going well and will be hard to beat wherever she goes next.

Sacred Feeling also went around on Saturday in an 1800m Class 3 at Eagle Farm in Queensland. She had the run of the race but again got keen in the early and mid stages and it hampered her finishing burst. At the top of the straight she looked the winner again, but ran out of steam over the closing stage of her race. We may elect to drop her back to 1600m next time out and let her run closer to the speed.

Copperfield went around in a BM66 over 1550m on Saturday in Adelaide and we were disappointed with him. He dictated in front and got pestered by the 200/1 shot, but in saying that we expected him to finish off better than that. The jump to 1550m may have told late and we will give him another one over a similar distance in a few weeks' time.

Headlock went around in a BM58 over 1600m at Swan Hill on Tuesday and was good, finishing fourth. He is knocking on the door for a win. Trainer Toby Lake will look to extend him out to 2000m and he will be going close to getting that win we are looking for.

This Week's Runners...

Tymon will make his way to Geelong today for a 1500m maiden in race 4 at 3pm. He has the services of Jack Hill in the saddle but he has drawn a little sticky in barrier 12 or 10 after scratchings this morning,  His run last start was very good and the horse is now rock hard fit third up and we are expecting a forward showing in a strong race with plenty of chances. A little bit of luck from the barrier and he will be going close.

Suffolk Star goes around today at Geelong in a 2200m maiden. His two runs this time in for Paul Preusker have been ok and we are expecting to see good improvement from the son of Nathaniel this time. Paul has a good opinion of him and let's hope he can put his best foot forward tomorrow for his patient owners.

Hedged has made his way to Sydney for the Gr2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes at Randwick on Saturday over 1200m for 3YO's. He has travelled up great after his unlucky run down the straight at Flemington last time out. He is rock hard fit now and will get soft conditions that will improve his chances significantly. He is a sneaky little each way chance in a tough race.

Presser makes his return to the track at Bendigo on Saturday for Bendigo Golden Mile day. He will line up in a BM70 over 1300m. He has John Allen in the saddle and from barrier 10 will get back and look to be strong late. He will definitely benefit from the run but he has the class to be competitive in a race like this.

On Saturday at Ararat we have Crux ready to go again over 1600m in a BM58 for Paul Preusker. Paul has taken his time with the gelding and he appears to be in good order for this assignment. Due to the wide barrier we will be riding him conservatively to finish off strongly down the middle of the track late.

Last start winner Our Silver Linings is going to Bairnsdale for a BM58 over 1000m. Her win last start at Warracknabeal was impressive against moderate opposition. Let's hope the small step up to BM58 grade here ensures she is just as competitive. We think she will be hard to beat if she can draw a barrier and have some luck in running.

Bear's Best Bets for the Weekend!

The big bear couldn't keep the hot run going last week and his best of the day Another Wil was good in the Donny but tired late for a seventh beaten a few lengths. His best each way of the day Stockman also tired a bit late for a fifth in the Chairman's.

This weekend the weather is drying out in Sin City and the big fella is heading north to try and find you some winners. Let's hope he is back on the money again this weekend.

Good punting!

Best of the day - Randwick - Race 1 No 3 Broadsiding - Found the best bet of the day with the Blue Army, which will kick off an amazing day of racing - Day 2 of The  Championships.  This is a 3YO race over a mile so the pedigree is key here, you need a horse that can run the 8 furlongs out strongly. Broadsiding's sire is the up and coming Too Darn Hot, who is a son of all conquering Dubawi, and the 1st Dam is by Street Cry who won over a mile.  Last start, Broadsiding was strong to the line over 7 furlongs after making a long sustained run without much cover.  Barrier 10 is a little bit tricky but with JMac in the saddle, I'm trusting our best hoop to find cover early and be too strong late.  Danger is Miss Busslinger who came out of the same lead up race. Best bet of the day. Win @ $3.00

Best Each way of the day - Randwick Race 9 no 6 Olentia - I have found the each way bet in the Gr1 WFA Queen of the Turf 1600m. The daughter of Zoustar was very strong over 1500m last start smashing the line in a Gr2 affair. So the extra 100m should hold no fears. T. Berry retains the ride and from barrier 10 you can see a similar run in transit, being midfield and exploding down the middle of straight to be right in the finish. Each way all day. Each way  @ $9 & $2.90
