Gusmao Gets His Win

Gusmao ridden by Dean Yendall wins the Buloke Plumbing 4YO+ Maiden Plate at Donald Racecourse on March 26, 2023

It has been a long road for the son of Dissident and his connections, Freedman’s patient approach for the horses has paid dividends with the consistent gelding earning a well-deserved break through.

He was a $50,000 Melbourne Premier purchase from Supreme Thoroughbreds and has a loyal group of owners who are always there to cheer him on, rail hail or shine. Included in the ownership group is prominent racing journalist’s Damien Ractliffe syndicate ‘NEXT GEN OF RACING’ who are a group of young, like-minded individuals with an interest to get involved in racing, we are thrilled to have a winner for the group.

A relieved Freedman said post-race “It was a pleasing result for connections to see Gusmao get the victory. He has been very consistent and we think now full of confidence, he should be winning another race very quickly.”

The silver lining of Gusmao taking ten starts to break his maiden has resulted in him receiving a 58 rating, making him eligible for 0-58 racing. We feel he will be very competitive in that grade and will be one to follow through the grades.

Join us in congratulating the connections of Gusmao, we hope to see them in the winners stall again soon!

Kathy's Beau winning the Hygain Maiden Plate under Will Price at Kyneton Racecourse on March 16, 2023

Kathy’s Beau wins for the Whorlow Family

You can feel the passion and pride in Mark Whorlow’s voice when he talks about horse racing, the passion runs deep for him in more ways than one. Recent debutant winner Kathy’s Beau for Mitch Freedman Racing is a real fairy tale story, “It’s been a family affair, full credit to the family for seeing it through until the horse got to the races without dad." Explains Whorlow.

Growing up he remembers having ponies and riding in his childhood, guided by his late father Les Whorlow. “Dad was a true, old school gentleman. Always dressed well, he’d wear a hat to the races and took a lot of pride in his appearance. Going to the races was a dress up occasion for him, he always looked the part.”

“When I was driving to the races to watch Kathy’s Beau, I thought, if dad could see the way I’m dressed he’d have a go at me.”

Mark explains, “he was a horse lover who loved horse racing, and owned a number of horses along the way. He had a race horse called Kathy’s Spirit, who was named after my late sister. The mare was later mated to Turrfontein in tandom with close friend and successful breeder, John Sutcliffe. The foal was named Kathy’s Beau.

“The family wanted to get Kathy's Beau to the track as a tribute to mum and dad, to see the colours go around the track again. I’ve been managing the horse on behalf of the family, because that’s what dad would have wanted. A few of the family members aren’t horsey people and it can be expensive, but everyone agreed to do our best to get the horse to the races."

Kathy's Beau stepped out on debut at Kyneton under Liam Riordan, “Before the race I said to the jockey, you’re not the only bloke riding the horse today. You’ve got someone travelling with you. I was the only one at the track that day Kathy’s Beau won, and it was just exhilarating.” The horse went on to win in dominant style, winning clear of the field by two and a half lengths.

Freedman said post-race “Having known Les through my time with Darren Weir, it is a very pleasing result to get the win today racing in the Whorlow family colours. We are honoured to train a winner for the family.” Kathy’s Beau “still does a bit wrong and is a bit green, but he does possess good raw ability and it was pleasing to see him get the result.” He looks to be a horse with a nice future ahead of him and will continue to improve with racing.

Kathy’s Beau broke a streak of placings for Freedman, who had seven place getters from his last ten runners, delivering his 14th winner of the season. The team is striking at 50% runners in the top three from the past 50 starters and has a busy finish towards the end of March, including the exciting Ceerseven racing on Saturday in the $750,000 Group 2 Alister Clark stakes.

See you tomorrow!

Cast your eye over our 2023 yearling purchases during the parade, and feast your eyes on the likes of in form stable runner Attrition and much more!

Boasting size and swagger, this colt is an exciting prospect we look forward to seeing join our stable soon!

By Group 1 producing sire Dundeel who has sired the likes of Super Seth, this colt is out of well-related winner Standing Up who is from the family of Urban Sea, the dam of super-stallions Galileo and Sea The Stars.

This outstanding colt captured Mitch’s attention at the 2023 Premier Yearling Sales from the first time he cast his eyes over him. He’s a strong individual who gives an impression he could be a late two-year-old, and step out as an exceptional three-year-old.

He will look to head to the breakers in early April where he will begin his education, we are very excited to follow his progress as he learns his trade!

Patrika Gold Back On Winners List

Patrika Gold ridden by Mark Pegus wins the Russ Studio Jewellers BM58 Handicap at Ararat Racecourse on March 03, 2023

Patrika Gold led from pillar to post on Friday at Ararat for her second career victory. The daughter of Puissance De Lune has been has showed good abilty at home, but has been a challenge for Mitch and the team. After winning comfortably on debut, Mitch tested her out at city class but unfortunately things did not go to plan.
Following a disappointing two-start campaign in the spring, Freedman trusted that he could get the mare back on song, nurturing her in the stables and rebuilding her confidence and fitness. Her owner, Paul Sturt has been a pleasure to deal with and we were thrilled to get another result with the mare. We feel she has far better ability than benchmark 58 grade and this is a step in the right direction.  Patrika Gold was ridden by veteran Victorian jockey, Mark Pegus who rode his first winner for the stable for quiet some time. Mark has been working hard for the stable and great to see a result for the team.
The Team Freedman momentum continues to roll on, going at almost 50% runners in the top 3 for the past 50 runners and it is very pleasing to see another winner.

Congratulations to connections!
