Samurai Star cuts through at Echuca

Five-year-old son of Tosen Stardom has only had the seven career starts to date and looks to be in for a promising campaign. “He will improve with a set of blinkers on at his next start and then continue to improve as he steps out in distance with more racing under his belt.” Freedman said.

Favourite racehorse and why?
Platelet- found her in a paddock near orange and paid $20,000 for her and she won almost $1.4m

The race you’d love to win, and why?

Melbourne cup- every Australian racehorse owners dream.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?

You can knock someone’s partner but don’t knock their horse

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your introduction into horse racing, and how long you have been involved?
A: I bought a share in my first horse called Mookta in 1991 with Mark Riley, he won the Oakleigh Plate in 1993 and the Newmarket in 1994 and paid for our house. Looking back now, that was ridiculous. If Mookta was slow, our life would be rather different. We would not have been involved in racing or breeding as we are now.

Q: During your time in racing, how many horses have been involved in and what would be your favourite memory or highlight that involves horses?

A: We've raced all over the world, there have been many many horses. Too many probably. We've been fortunate to be involved with the likes of Jakkalberry, Dandino and TAC De Biostron just to list a few.

My favourite memory in racing to date would be running a very close second in the Melbourne Cup with Heartbreak City in 2016. So close but so rewarding after finding the horse, and almost pulling off the win. That was such a great thrill. It’s a lot harder now, with many people trying to do it and paying overs.

Q: Who was your first horse with Mitch, and how did that relationship evolve?

A: I first came across Mitch when he was working for Darren Weir at the Warrnambool stables, we had Rue Maple there who was a handy mare. Dandio was there at the time too, I remember asking Mitch how they were going and he said best I ask Darren, he gave me nothing!

Q: A
s an owner, what has your experience been like?
A: My take is that Mitch loves what he does, and prides himself on knowing each horse individually and training them accordingly. He is a bit of an old fashioned type of trainer in some ways, riding his own work because not many do these days. And I think that would be a huge advantage, he probably likes horses better than people.

I was delighted to see him get his group one win last season, hopefully he gets good stock and gets on a roll in 2024/25.

Q: Do you have any goals or ambitions as an owner?

A: As an old timer in the game and on the way out, I would dearly love to win a Melbourne Cup after coming close a few times. I'd also like to win a hometown Geelong Cup for my wife Liz, she would love that. I need to get that done whilst I can still remember my own name!

Q: What would you tell someone keen on getting into horse racing?

A: Use only disposable income, it’s a hobby not an investment. Otherwise run for the hills.

Employee of the Month

This month we'd like to give a shout out to Gerard Steenhuis, known around the stable as Bob.

Bob is a huge asset to the stable bringing a wealth of horse knowledge from his experience in harness racing. Bob helps out between jobs, we count ourselves lucky to have him on our team.

Big shout out to Bob and all his hard work, thank you!
