The Late Mail...

Around the traps...

Above - Profiteer's first crop hit the weanling sales this week and they are just like their old man -
precocious and ready to go!

This week was a chance to catch our breath after a massive couple of weeks with runners all over the place, country carnivals, and lots of horse movements. On the track we had 3 runners last week after a few scratchings, again with one winner but it should have been two. Well done to connections of English Gambler in NZ, our enigmatic homebody jumper got the job done in his customary front running antics.  Forget the run of Lacemaker, the track was not to her liking and we are still trying to work out how Nova Lights got beaten!

The Inglis Weanling and Broodmare Sale took place in Sydney last week. Our bloodstock agent Jeremy Rogers was on hand and it was interesting to see how the first season sires' progeny were received, including our own Profiteer.

Jeremy said there were three of his nine at the sales that he really liked. While we didn't purchase any weanlings, it was an encouraging start for Profiteer in that he is throwing nice stock. From only nine of his horses at the sales and six which sold, they averaged $25K and the top lot made $40K.

Buyers of weanlings normally pinhook (on sell) these weanlings the next year at the yearling sales, so we would expect these nice horses to make at least double, around $80K - $100K next year. With another 8 to sell at Magic Millions Weanling Sale in 2 weeks' time, it will give us a nice sample size as to how the market are reacting to his progeny.

Early signs are that the old man is throwing plenty of precocity into the offspring and they look like early runners. Let's hope they are right and we look forward to seeing them as yearlings next year.

Shamus Award filly looks a real runner!

Above - Exceptional filly with a great presence and she looks an early runner.

The third horse we are presenting as part of our value series is this lovely filly who ticks all of our boxes and looks an early runner for not a lot of money.

Here is a lovely yearling the team purchased at Inglis Classic Sale in Sydney in February in conjunction with Mitch Freedman for only $60k. You only have to take a quick look at her to realise she is compact, very athletic and a forward and racy type. She's by a sire that is doing a great job at stud in Shamus Award and out of an Adelaide mare who also got up and going as a 2YO before injury curtailed her racing career.

This filly was an early foal, being born in August and you can tell that she has developed quickly after birth. She has a lovely big barrel girth with plenty of room for a big heart and lung capacity, she has a lovely big rear end to generate power and confirmationally she vetted out perfect.

To add to this fillies appeal she was born and raised in Victoria to a Victorian stallion so she is VOBIS Silver and VOBIS Sires eligible and qualifies for all of the rich race series bonuses here in Victoria. Mitch Freedman will put the polish on this girl and while we think she won't take too long to get up and going, Mitch takes a sensible approach to his training and only pushes them along when they are ready.

With only 1 share available in this exciting filly at $4,990 for 5%, get on the blower to Rob straight away!

Last Week's Runners..

Over the ditch in NZ English Gambler   continued on his merry way winning over the hurdles in a 2800m Hurdle. As the enigmatic horse does, he sped to the lead and cleared out from the field by a huge margin. Coming to the final 800m the field crept back to be within striking distance, but Gambler kicked again and won comfortably by 4 lengths.

Crux went around at Horsham on Saturday in a BM58 over 1800m and he went great from a sticky position during the run, being on the fence with not much room in running. Coming into the straight, jockey Dean Yendall got off the fence and Crux finished off nicely to run fourth beaten under 2 lengths. He is going great and we need the heavens to open up and find soft ground.

On Monday we saw Lacemaker go around in a BM64 for fillies and mares over 1100m and on face value she looked disappointing. The track at Werribee was very shifty towards the inside and she never travelled during the run. While she was well beaten she stuck to her task and wasn't disgraced for a sixth. Put it down to a forget run and watch her back up next start.

On Wednesday Nova Lights went around at Sandown in a BM64 for fillies and mares and we still can't believe she got beaten by the smallest of margins. On a leader biased track our plan was to lead but we missed the start by two lengths. Jockey Luke Currie used her to find the lead and she looked the winner to the 10m mark and just got pipped. It was a great run and she is going really well. Look out next start.

This Week's Runners...

Also on Saturday at the Sunshine Coast we have exciting 2YO colt Barbaric Lad going around in the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic over 1200m. Anthony Freedman is in QLD with the colt and he is very happy with him going into Saturday, but from barrier 1 we will be going back and looking for some luck. He may find the 1200m too short as we aim for races over further in the coming weeks.

Bear's Best Bets for the Weekend!

No love for the great man last week at Caulfield. His best of the day was Mawallock and it seemed like every man and his dog was backing him into $1.70, unfortunately he couldn't get the job done and finished fourth. Later in the day the best each way of the day Matthew went ordinary and finished seventh and was beaten over 5 lengths.

We are back at Caulfield this week but carnivals are in full swing in Adelaide and Brisbane so the big fella might be travelling far and wide to get a winner this weekend. Let's see what he has come u with this week.

Best of the day - Sunshine Coast - Race 6 no 3 Corniche - Going with the Blue Army for the best bet of the day.  Corniche has come through the Sydney Autumn carnival which is much stronger form lines. Last Start finished fourth in the Arrowfield Stakes Gr2 ( this race should be Group 1- but this is discussion for another day).  Schwarz finished 6th in this race & won Gr3 Hawkesbury Guineas last weekend so the form is franked.  J Mac on piloting duties, barrier 10 holds no concern as it is get back and run on horse.  Corniche is the one to beat and is the best bet of the day! Win @ $4.20

Each Way - Sunshine Coast - Race 7 no 5 Just Folk - What a wonderful training performance by G Bedgood, to take over the training of Just Folk and place the gelded son of Magnus in suitable races -  8 starts for 2 wins & further 4 placings. Just Folk is now a 2 x Gr3 winner, he is a mudder ( handles wet ground) & has won on the back up during Melbourne Spring Carnival.  Just Folk deserves a crack at this Gr2 race, noted he won Gr2 Ajax Stakes beating Elsberg on Heavy 9 track. M Zahra steering, so we lose nothing with N Rawiller jumping off to ride Kovalica, who is also a chance in this race but doesn't win out of turn. At each way odds, Just Folk represents value on Saturday. Each way @ $7 & $2.40

Good punting!
